For residents new to Bermuda, obtaining a driver’s licence for a car or motorcycle can be quite easy if you follow the steps below:
-
Have your doctor complete Section C of the Application for a Driver's License or Learner's Permit. you can download the form.
-
Bring your birth certificate or passport when you apply for your licence.
-
Provide proof of residence (Work Permit). You must be able to prove that you are or will be resident in Bermuda for a period of 30 days or more. In the case of visitors renting property on a holiday basis for 30 days or more, a copy of your lease may be required.
-
Pass the theory exam, which is a set of multiple-choice questions designed to test your general knowledge of the rules of the road, local signage, and speed limits. The test is based on the Traffic Code Handbook, which you can buy at TCD. You can come in to take the theory exam any time between 8:30am and 4:00 pm without an appointment.
-
Passing the theory exam allows you to apply for a learner’s permit, which you will need to practice driving on Bermuda’s roads—accompanied by a person with a valid Bermuda drivers licence.
-
In order to obtain a motorcycle or vehicle licence one must pass the riding/driving exam. For this test an appointment must be made in advance. You will need to provide your own motorcycle or car for the test. Appointments made for driving must be confirmed before 12 noon on the day before the test.
-
After passing the driving test persons under the age of 65 years will be issued a licence for up to a period of 10 years, or up to your 65th birthday.
Helpful Hint:
New residents may find it helpful to book an “orientation lesson” with a local driving instructor. This will familiarize you with local driving practices, city road markings, and the “one way” routes throughout the city. The Traffic Code Handbooks may be purchased in the Registration Department at the main office. The Transport Control Department is located on North Street in Hamilton.
